Lactation Aid

Baby was already on the bottle a lot, and altho willing to DL, but usually ends up crying after every feed. This is because baby has learnt that mommy's breast is for comfort but the 'real food' will come later in a bottle. And because the bottle flow is fast and constant, baby usually rejects the breast when flow slows down. So using this method, we may be able to train baby to suck a lot longer at the breast, and thus provide enough stimulation to increase BM production. Mommy is till trying and doing her best.

What is most Rewarding about Breastfeeding and Attachment Parenting?

My 14-year old daughter did not fulfill an agreement made with me, and as a result, i denied her usage of her phone for the rest of the evening. At first she cajoled, then she pouted and sulked and finally got angry and stalked away. A while later, right before we say our nightly family prayers, she gave me a long hug.

I prodded her, "Arent you angry?",
She replied, "Yes, but still can hug ma".
This is the outcome of cuddling and carrying her 'all the time' despite threats and warnings from the older folks that she'll turn into "a clingy whiny baby".

This is the outcome of co-sleeping and breastfeeding. Of moving her out of my bed when she was around 1, and then having her climb back in almost every night until she was 8.
This is the outcome of sacrificing holidays overseas, branded bags and clothes, home-cooked food instead of eating out.

This is the outcome of Attachment Parenting

Testimonial by Mommy Chia Yi

Can't believe it has been over 6 weeks since Jett came into our lives. Staying at Gina's Place for the first 4 weeks was definitely the right choice for us. Gina's is like a home away from home - all the comfort but with 24/7 assistance just a button away, especially when baby was crying and we didn't know how to soothe or comfort him, or when we just needed some rest or sleep. I also appreciated the useful advice and support on breastfeeding (really helped when I was stressed out that first few days!) and parenting from Gina Mei-Keng Yong and Daphne, daily laundry service and room cleaning, the fact that daddy got to stay as well, and not to forget the really yummy, healthy and nutritious food. I also miss the daily lunch and dinner chats with the other mummies, exchanging experiences and stories with each other, which is something you won't get if you have your confinement at home and only have your confinement lady to talk to! So thank you Gina, Daphne, and all the staff at Gina's for a wonderful confinement stay!

Gina, I wanna tell you that you are awesome with big thumbs up. Your experience in breastfeeding is abundant, and there is always something that I could learn from you. Having breastfed before does not guarantee you a successful attempt with your subsequent child. Every child is different and every bf journey is unique. With your help, I could bf successfully without a need to top up fm ke, worry about jaundice problem ke, etc for my 2nd child. Gina, you are indeed a sifu!! And Daphne, ur support is equally important. You give us the emotional confidence and at the same time give us all the tips & tricks on bf and not forgetting home remedies and such. A big sister indeed that we could look up to. With these both ladies around, is there any where better than Gina's Place?? I highly recommend this confinement home and would consider coming back myself :)

From a husband's perspective, Gina's Place is certainly a "Mummy's retreat" to recover from a tiring delivery. My wife certainly got the much needed rest she required, breast feeding support and not forgetting, the "endless" nutritious healthy food and desserts sent her way. Our little bundle of joy, Hannah also got all the much needed attention and pampering she required...which seemed rather often. To the husbands that will be staying here, the food is awesome! Never missed a single meal they provided!

A huge thank you Gina, Daphne and most importantly, the nurses for their endless patience, care and support you have given us. The guidance that you given us definitely makes it that much easier in preparing us for the challenges ahead.

PS: We certainly miss "the button" and at some times, wished we had one...with one of your nurses...hahaha. All the best Gina!

The Birth of a Breastfeeding Postnatal Centre

I have been helping new mommies overcome their breastfeeding challenges since 2003. And it's indeed very frustrating that most of these new mommies’ desire to fully breastfeed their babies are thwarted by confinement ladies or the grandparents who are neither knowledgeable nor supportive of breastfeeding.

I used to visit new mothers in their homes. Most of the times, when I was with the mother and baby, they would be able to latch on beautifully. I would be able to help mommy identify a good latch, whether baby is really drinking or just pacifying, and to judge when baby has enough. But when I leave, they would back to square one. Baby cries and the CL or grandma will start making negative comments that baby is still hungry and pressure the mother to give baby a bottle of formula milk!

Although I do believe that the parents should stand firm against all objections and discouragement, I also understand that both Mommy and Daddy are very vulnerable as new parents; they tend to break down and give in to family pressures to “not starve your baby for goodness sake!! A bottle of formula milk won’t harm your baby!”

How I wish I could whisk this parents away from all these negativity and provide them with an environment where the new Mommy and Daddy would receive not only positive vibes and encouragement, but correct information in making breastfeeding successful!

I toyed with this idea for a few years, and finally in 2012, with the support of a few good friends, I set up a breastfeeding friendly confinement centre. With the experiences gained from running this centre, I moved on to offer better and upgraded services at Gina’s Place.

Initially I wanted to hire experienced confinement ladies. After interviewing more than 20 of them, I gave up hope of ever finding one who’s willing to be breastfeeding friendly. ALL of them believe that not all mothers will have milk and supplementing with formula milk is necessary.

I decided that a registered nurse would serve the same purpose as a confinement lady, ie taking care of a newborn and helping the new mother. I know that nurses do not receive much lactation instructions in nursing school, but that’s ok. During the interviewing process, I stressed the importance of the nurses embracing the message of ‘exclusive breastfeeding’. Only nurses who are willing to learn would be considered for the job.

A dedicated chef  prepares the menu at Gina’s Place. Together, we spent  hours going through confinement recipes books and websites, and talking to TCM practitioners on the ‘can eat’ and ‘cannot eat’ food. Most of them confirmed my belief that moderation is key when it comes to consuming food during the confinement period. We put in a lot of effort in planning the menu to ensure that it promotes healthy lactation and recuperation of the mother. We are willing to go the distance in ensuring the quality of our raw materials ie healthy free-range chickens, An Xin Pork, organic grains and sulfite-free herbs.

At Gina’s Place we have one guarantee. As long as the mother is willing, she will get the best help in making her breastfeedng journey a successful one.

Alternative to Bottles

Alternative to Bottles

When it is necessary to breastfeed a baby and mommy is not available, using an artificial nipple is likely to lead to nipple confusion. The sucking motion which baby learns from the rubber nipple is not the same at the breast, and baby quickly becomes frustrated and confused.

There are a few alternatives and this picture shows one of methods- Finger feeding, using a Ryles tube and a syringe.
